Are the Paris Catacombs Worth Visiting? What to Expect

When most people think about Paris, they picture landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre-Dame.

The Paris Catacombs offer something completely different.

Located beneath the streets of Paris, the Catacombs contain the remains of millions of people and provide one of the city’s most unusual attractions.

During our week in Paris before boarding AMA Waterways’ Paris & Normandy cruise, we decided to see the Catacombs for ourselves.

Before our trip, the Catacombs were one of the Paris attractions we were most curious about.

After all, how many cities have an underground network filled with the remains of millions of people?

The idea sounded both fascinating and slightly unsettling, which made it impossible for us to pass up.

Since we were already planning to visit several of Paris’ most famous attractions, adding the Catacombs felt like a chance to experience a completely different side of the city.

If you’re wondering whether the Paris Catacombs are worth visiting, here’s what our experience was like and what you can expect.

Booking Tickets for the Paris Catacombs

We purchased our tickets directly through the official Catacombs website before our visit.

Our tickets cost approximately 31 euros and included an audio guide.

Booking in advance is something I’d recommend, especially during the busy summer season, since timed-entry tickets can sell out.

The audio guide was included with admission and provided useful background information throughout the tour.

Entering the Paris Catacombs

One thing we hadn’t really considered before visiting was how far below the city the Catacombs actually are.

After entering the site, visitors descend a long spiral staircase into the underground tunnels.

By the time we reached the bottom, it already felt like we had left modern Paris behind and entered a completely different world.

The temperature change was immediately noticeable.

We visited Paris during a hot stretch of summer weather, so the cooler air underground was actually a welcome break from the heat above.

What It’s Like Inside the Paris Catacombs

The Catacombs are much darker than most attractions you’ll visit in Paris.

The experience begins with a series of long underground tunnels before reaching the famous sections containing the bones.

At first, it feels more like exploring an underground passageway than visiting one of Paris’ most popular attractions.

The further we walked, however, the easier it became to understand why so many people include the Catacombs on their Paris itinerary.

The combination of dim lighting, cool temperatures, and the knowledge of what lies ahead creates a very unique atmosphere.

While the Catacombs are often described as creepy, we found them more fascinating than frightening.

The audio guide helped provide historical context throughout the visit, making the experience feel educational rather than simply shocking.

Seeing the Bones and Skulls

Seeing the displays of bones and skulls for the first time was definitely the most memorable part of the visit.

Photos really don’t do it justice.

No matter how many pictures you’ve seen online, it’s difficult to comprehend the scale of the Catacombs until you’re standing there in person looking at passageways lined with human remains.

It was easily one of the most unusual things we experienced during our week in Paris.

The arrangements of bones and skulls are surprisingly organized, and the sheer volume of remains is hard to wrap your head around.

Whether you find it fascinating, unsettling, or a bit of both, it’s an experience you’re unlikely to forget.

Crowds and Wait Times

One thing we appreciated was that the Catacombs never felt overly crowded.

Because we had purchased timed-entry tickets in advance, we didn’t have to wait in a long line to get inside.

Once underground, there was plenty of space to move at our own pace and take in the experience.

Compared to attractions like the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, the Catacombs felt relatively calm.

That made it easier to stop, listen to the audio guide, and fully appreciate the experience without feeling rushed.

Who Should Visit the Paris Catacombs?

The Catacombs aren’t for everyone.

If you’re uncomfortable in dark underground spaces or simply aren’t interested in history, you may find other Paris attractions more rewarding.

However, travelers looking for something unique and completely different from the city’s museums, churches, and monuments will likely find the experience worthwhile.

It’s also a great option on a hot summer day thanks to the cooler temperatures underground.

For us, it provided a nice contrast to the more traditional Paris attractions we visited throughout the week.

Are the Paris Catacombs Worth Visiting?

For us, yes.

The Catacombs provided one of the most unique experiences we had in Paris.

The combination of history, eerie atmosphere, underground passageways, and the famous displays of bones and skulls made it unlike anything else on our itinerary.

That said, it isn’t necessarily an attraction we’d visit again.

Part of what makes the Catacombs special is the novelty of seeing them for the first time. Now that we’ve experienced them, we don’t feel a strong need to return.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, we’re glad we included the Paris Catacombs in our itinerary.

While it wasn’t our favorite attraction in Paris, it was definitely one of the most unique.

If you’re looking for something different from the city’s museums, churches, and famous landmarks, the Catacombs offer a fascinating glimpse into a lesser-known part of Paris’ history.

Would we do it again? Probably not.

Would we recommend it to first-time visitors looking for a unique experience? Absolutely.

Even among all the iconic attractions we visited during our week in Paris, it’s still one of the experiences we talk about most.
