Efteling from Amsterdam: Is It Worth the Day Trip?
When most people think about day trips from Amsterdam, theme parks probably aren’t at the top of the list.
But after hearing people rave about Efteling for years, we decided to see it for ourselves. Located about an hour from Amsterdam, this Dutch theme park is often compared to Disney. After spending a full day there, though, we came away thinking that’s not really the right comparison at all.
Efteling has its own identity. Between the fairytale atmosphere, incredible dark rides, unique attractions, and quirky sense of humor, it ended up being one of our favorite theme park experiences of the entire trip.
Getting to Efteling from Amsterdam
We drove to Efteling, and the trip was surprisingly easy, taking us about one hour. We left around 8:15 AM and arrived around 9:30 AM, giving us plenty of time to get parked and head into the park.
We already had a rental car since we’d driven it from Phantasialand the day before, so continuing on to Efteling by car was the easy choice for us. It also gave us more flexibility than relying on public transportation. That said, there’s also a bus or train option if you’d rather not drive.
Parking cost €15, and our park ticket was €44 per person. If you’re already planning to rent a car during your Amsterdam trip, Efteling is a pretty easy addition and worth considering.
What Is Efteling Like?
The easiest way we can describe Efteling is that it’s kind of like a mini Disney, but with its own quirky personality.
The park has a strong fairytale theme throughout, but it doesn’t feel like you’re just walking through a collection of Disney rides. There are lots of unique characters, strange and fun animatronics, beautiful scenery, and attractions you aren’t likely to find anywhere else.
One of the things that really stood out to us was the dark rides. Efteling does dark rides incredibly well. They have detailed sets, animatronics, music, storytelling, and a really immersive atmosphere.
And some of the animatronics are just weird, but in the best possible way.
There’s something really charming about Efteling because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. You’ll see quirky characters and unusual things throughout the park that make you stop and wonder what exactly you’re looking at.

The Rides
Efteling has a great mix of attractions, from impressive dark rides and family attractions to some really fun roller coasters.
Our first ride of the day was Symbolica, and it set the tone for the rest of our visit. The detail, storytelling, sets, and overall experience were incredible. Honestly, we’d put it above most Disney dark rides we’ve been on.
Danse Macabre was easily our favorite attraction. The theming, atmosphere, and overall experience were unlike anything we’d experienced before. It’s an attraction we’d love to see brought closer to home because we’d absolutely ride it again.
I also reached a pretty big personal milestone during our visit. De Vliegende Hollander became my 300th coaster credit, which made an already memorable ride even more special.
Unfortunately, Baron 1898 was closed during our visit, so we didn’t get the chance to ride it. Even with Baron closed, though, we still felt like we had plenty to experience throughout the park.
For us, the combination of incredible dark rides, coasters, theming, and quirky animatronics is what made Efteling so memorable.

Food at Efteling
We didn’t have time to sit down for a full meal during our visit, but there were still some good options for a quick bite around the park.
For Julia, who has celiac disease, we found a couple of quick-service locations that offered gluten-free snacks prepared in a dedicated fryer, which was a nice option to have while spending the day in the park.
One of the easiest gluten-free snack options we found was the potato chips on a stick, which made for a great snack while exploring the park.
There are also apparently several sit-down restaurants throughout Efteling that offer more extensive gluten-free options. We didn’t have time to try those ourselves, so we can’t speak from personal experience, but they’re worth looking into if you’re traveling with celiac disease and want a more substantial meal.
Since we were trying to fit as much as possible into our day, we chose to keep our food stops quick so we could spend more time enjoying the attractions.
Is One Day Enough?
For our visit, one day was enough.
We were able to experience 15 different attractions throughout the day without feeling like we were rushing from one ride to the next. We even had time to go back and ride Symbolica, Danse Macabre, and De Vliegende Hollander a second time before leaving the park.
The only things we didn’t have time for were additional rerides and sitting down for a full meal.
If your goal is to experience the park’s major attractions, we think one full day is plenty. If you want to take your time, ride your favorites several times, enjoy a full sit-down meal, and really soak in all the theming, you could easily spend longer.
For us, though, one day worked perfectly, and it’s easy to fit into a broader Amsterdam itinerary.

Is Efteling Worth the Trip From Amsterdam?
Absolutely.
It’s not simply a European version of an American theme park. It has its own identity, and that’s what makes it so much fun. If you’re already going to Amsterdam and have an extra day available, we’d definitely consider adding Efteling to your itinerary.

Final Thoughts
Efteling was one of those theme parks that surprised us. We went in knowing it was supposed to be great, but the combination of fantasy, dark rides, quirky animatronics, beautiful theming, and roller coasters made it feel completely unique.
Danse Macabre ended up being our favorite attraction, while Symbolica was another top-tier dark ride that we honestly preferred over most Disney dark rides we’ve experienced. We enjoyed both so much that we made time to ride them twice during our visit. Getting my 300th coaster credit on De Vliegende Hollander made the visit even more memorable, and we couldn’t resist taking a second ride on that one as well. Even with Baron 1898 closed, we still had an amazing day.
It’s easy to see why people compare parts of Efteling to Disney, but after visiting, we think it deserves to be appreciated for what it is rather than simply being compared to another theme park.
We’ll definitely be back, especially with a new roller coaster planned for 2029. If you’re a theme park fan visiting Amsterdam, put Efteling on your list.
