PortAventura World and Ferrari Land Day Trip from Barcelona: Is It Worth It?

If you’re spending a few extra days in Barcelona, there’s a good chance your itinerary is already packed with famous landmarks, historic neighborhoods, incredible architecture, and plenty of tapas. But if you’re looking for a break from sightseeing and want to experience something completely different, PortAventura World is one of the best day trips you can take from the city.

Located just over an hour south of Barcelona near the resort town of Salou, PortAventura World is one of Europe’s largest theme park destinations. The resort combines the expansive PortAventura Park, the high-speed thrills of Ferrari Land, a seasonal water park, and several on-site hotels, making it far more than just a typical amusement park.

After finishing our Highlights of Spain tour, we extended our trip and decided to spend a day exploring both parks. What we expected to be a fun side excursion ended up becoming one of the highlights of our time in Spain. Between the world-class roller coasters, immersive themed lands, and surprisingly easy train ride from Barcelona, we packed a lot into a single day.

In this guide, we’ll share exactly how we got there, how we saved money on tickets, our favorite rides, whether the Fast Pass is worth the extra cost, and whether one day is enough to experience both PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land.

What Is PortAventura World?

PortAventura World is a large entertainment resort located near Salou on Spain’s Costa Daurada.

The resort includes:

  • PortAventura Park
  • Ferrari Land
  • Caribe Aquatic Park (seasonal)
  • Multiple on-site hotels and resort amenities

For most visitors, PortAventura Park is the main attraction and where the majority of the day will be spent. Ferrari Land serves as a smaller companion park focused on Ferrari, Formula 1 racing, and several major thrill attractions.

Together, the parks offer more than enough attractions to fill an entire day and potentially even a weekend for dedicated theme park fans.

Getting to PortAventura from Barcelona

One of the biggest surprises during our visit was just how easy it was to reach PortAventura from Barcelona.

We chose to travel by train and found the entire process simple, affordable, and stress-free. Since the resort is only about an hour away, it makes an ideal day trip without requiring a hotel change or a rental car.

Other transportation options include:

  • Rental car
  • Organized day tours
  • Private transfers

For us, the train was the clear winner. It was inexpensive, convenient, and dropped us within easy walking distance of the parks.

If you’re already staying in Barcelona and only want to dedicate a single day to PortAventura, train travel is hard to beat.

How We Saved Money on Tickets

One of the best discoveries of our trip was the combined train-and-park ticket package offered through Renfe.

For just €42 per person, our ticket included:

  • Round-trip train transportation from Barcelona
  • Admission to PortAventura Park
  • Admission to Ferrari Land

Considering what transportation and park admission would have cost separately, we found this to be an incredible value and one of the best travel deals we came across during our time in Spain.

There was one catch, however.

We were only able to purchase the package in person at the train station. We couldn’t find the same offer available online, which means it can be easy to overlook if you don’t specifically ask about available ticket packages.

If you’re planning a day trip from Barcelona, we’d highly recommend checking whether a similar package is still being offered before purchasing transportation and admission separately.

The savings alone may be enough to offset the cost of a Fast Pass or meals inside the park.

PortAventura Park

PortAventura Park is the larger of the two parks and where you’ll likely spend most of your day.

The park is divided into several themed areas:

  • Mediterrània
  • Polynesia
  • China
  • Mexico
  • Far West
  • Sesame Street

One of the things we enjoyed most was how distinct each area felt. The detailed theming helps the park feel much larger and more immersive than a traditional amusement park, with each section offering its own atmosphere, architecture, and attractions.

Our Favorite Rides

Shambhala

If you’re only going to prioritize one roller coaster at PortAventura, make it Shambhala.

Towering over the China section of the park, this hypercoaster delivers an incredible combination of height, speed, smoothness, and airtime. Every hill seems designed to lift you out of your seat, and the panoramic views of the park only make the experience better.

By the end of the day, it wasn’t just our favorite ride at PortAventura. It ranked among our favorite roller coasters anywhere.

Dragon Khan

No visit to PortAventura feels complete without riding Dragon Khan.

As one of the park’s most iconic attractions, this classic coaster has been thrilling guests for years. It may not be the newest ride in the park, but the combination of speed, inversions, and intensity still makes it a must-do attraction.

For coaster enthusiasts, it’s one of those rides that simply belongs on the checklist.

Furius Baco

Located near the entrance of the park, Furius Baco launches riders from 0 to 84 mph in just a few seconds before sending them racing through the Mediterrània section.

What makes this coaster especially unique is that it’s currently the only wing coaster ever built by Intamin.

Despite its relatively short ride time, don’t underestimate it. Furius Baco is one of the most intense attractions in the park, delivering a level of speed and aggression that few coasters can match.

Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence

One of PortAventura’s newest attractions, Uncharted combines immersive storytelling with an indoor roller coaster experience.

It was also the ride that consistently posted the longest wait times during our visit.

If riding Uncharted is a priority, we’d strongly recommend heading there early in the day or using a Fast Pass. The popularity of the attraction means lines can build quickly and remain long throughout the day.

Ferrari Land

Ferrari Land is significantly smaller than PortAventura Park, but we still felt it was well worth visiting.

The park is themed around Ferrari and Formula 1 racing, featuring attractions, restaurants, simulators, exhibits, and one of Europe’s most famous roller coasters.

Red Force

The main reason most visitors head to Ferrari Land is Red Force.

As one of Europe’s tallest and fastest roller coasters, it’s impossible to miss. The massive top hat tower dominates the skyline long before you even enter the park.

In our case, Red Force ended up being the only attraction we experienced in Ferrari Land, but honestly, that alone made the visit worthwhile.

The launch is absolutely unforgettable and should be at the top of every coaster enthusiast’s list.

Is One Day Enough for Both Parks?

Yes, but there’s an important caveat.

We visited both PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land in a single day and managed to experience roughly 15 attractions.

However, we visited on a busy Saturday and purchased the 10-ride Fast Pass. Without it, we likely would have spent the majority of our day waiting in line, as many of the most popular attractions were posting wait times of around an hour.

Our strategy was simple:

  • Spend most of the day in PortAventura Park
  • Head to Ferrari Land later in the afternoon

During our visit, PortAventura Park operated from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, while Ferrari Land was open from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. That schedule made it easy to enjoy the larger park first before ending the day at Ferrari Land.

If you’re visiting on a quieter weekday, one day should be sufficient.

If you’re visiting on a weekend, holiday, or during peak season, a Fast Pass can make a huge difference.

Is the Fast Pass Worth It?

For us, the answer was a definite yes.

On the Saturday we visited, many of the most popular rides had wait times of an hour or more throughout the day.

We purchased the 10-ride Fast Pass, which actually provided access to nine different attractions, with Grand Canyon Rapids available twice.

Without the Fast Pass, there’s no way we would have experienced as much as we did.

By the end of the day, we had completed roughly 15 attractions, including many of the park’s headline rides.

For visitors making a day trip from Barcelona, especially those hoping to visit both parks, we’d strongly recommend considering the Fast Pass. The extra cost can be well worth it if your goal is maximizing your limited time.

Tips for Visiting PortAventura

If you’re visiting from Barcelona, here are a few things we’d recommend:

  • Arrive as early as possible.
  • Start with the most popular rides.
  • Download the PortAventura app.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Stay hydrated, especially during the summer.
  • Consider purchasing a Fast Pass.
  • Have a rough plan for dividing your time between both parks.

The parks cover a large area, and even a basic strategy can help you maximize your day.

Who Should Visit PortAventura?

We think PortAventura is an excellent fit for:

  • Roller coaster enthusiasts
  • Theme park fans
  • Families spending extra time in Barcelona
  • Travelers looking for a break from museums and historic attractions
  • Formula 1 and Ferrari fans

If your Spain itinerary is heavily focused on churches, cathedrals, palaces, museums, and guided tours, PortAventura offers a fun change of pace and a completely different side of the country.

Where to Stay

Most visitors can comfortably visit PortAventura as a day trip from Barcelona.

However, if you’re planning to spend multiple days at the resort, staying nearby may make more sense.

Many guests choose one of the PortAventura resort hotels, while others prefer accommodations in nearby Salou, which offers a wide range of hotels, apartments, restaurants, and beach access.

Day Trip or Stay Overnight?

We visited PortAventura as a day trip from Barcelona and had no problem experiencing both parks in a single day.

That said, if you’re visiting during peak season, traveling with younger children, or hoping to ride everything at a more relaxed pace, spending a night in Salou could be a worthwhile option.

For most travelers, however, a day trip provides enough time to enjoy the highlights without the added expense of another hotel stay.

Is PortAventura & Ferrari Land Worth Visiting?

For us, the answer is an easy yes.

After several days of exploring Barcelona’s architecture, museums, historic sites, and food scene, PortAventura offered a completely different type of experience. It added variety to our trip and gave us a chance to spend a day doing something purely fun.

The combination of world-class roller coasters, immersive themed lands, convenient transportation from Barcelona, and the addition of Ferrari Land makes PortAventura one of the best day trips available from the city.

Would we recommend it to everyone? Not necessarily.

If you’re visiting Barcelona for only two or three days and have never seen the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, or other major attractions, we’d prioritize those first.

But if you have an extra day, enjoy theme parks, or simply want a break from traditional sightseeing, PortAventura World delivers far more than we expected.

Between Shambhala, Dragon Khan, Furius Baco, Uncharted, and Red Force, there’s enough here to justify the trip for roller coaster fans alone.

Bottom line: If you’re a theme park fan spending extra time in Barcelona, PortAventura World and Ferrari Land are absolutely worth adding to your Spain itinerary.
